THE MYTH

In Greek mythology, the Labyrinth (Gr. labýrinthos) was a complex architectural structure in Knossos, Crete. It was designed and built by the engineer Daedalus for the mythical King Minos of Crete. Its purpose was to imprison the Minotaur, a creature that was half-man, half-bull. According to the myth, every nine years, seven young men and seven young women were sent from Athens to Crete to be devoured by the Minotaur within the Labyrinth. The hero Theseus put an end to this sacrifice: he killed the Minotaur and found his way out of the Labyrinth with the help of Ariadne’s thread.
