The Cycladic figurines

The Cycladic figurines are the first sample of art in the ancient Greek culture. They are ranging in height from miniature examples of usually 25-30 cm to monumental sculptures of 153 cm. The majority of these figures usually represents nude female figures with long necks, arms folded above the abdomen, pointed feet and few incised details which indicate the gender. However there are also male figures, depicted as musicians, hunters or warriors. Most of the Cycladic figurines were found in tombs, but some were discovered in houses and even in sanctuaries, which adds to the mystery of their purpose. However, their simplicity, abstractness and self-efficiency undoubtedly demonstrate an art filled with great expressive power.

Cycladic culture

The name Cyclades was given by the ancient Greek authors to the circular complex of islands located in the center of the Aegean Sea, around the sacred island of Delos, where Olympian God Apollo was born and worshiped. Cycladic culture, one of the oldest in Europe, flourished in the Bronze Age, during the 3rd and 2nd millennium BC, mainly thanks to the mild climate and the privileged geographical location of the islands. The inhabitants were seafaring people who relied on the abundance of white marble in the area to develop trade and arts. Cycladic culture is best known for its schematic flat idols, the Cycladic figurines.
